1. Entry 1

   Cobalt is commonly recovered as a by-product of copper and nickel mining rather than from mines worked for cobalt alone. Its ores include sulfides, arsenides and sulfarsenides such as cobaltite.

2. Entry 2

   The name comes from the German Kobold, a mine goblin blamed for troublesome ores that yielded no expected metal and released poisonous arsenic fumes when smelted. Georg Brandt isolated cobalt as a distinct metal around 1735.

3. Entry 3

   Cobalt is the metal atom at the center of cobalamin molecules, better known as vitamin B12. The element also retains ferromagnetism and helps form heat-resistant superalloys and powerful permanent magnets.
