   Creosote bush, Larrea tridentata, dominates large parts of the Mojave, Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. Its tiny resin-coated leaves reduce water loss, helping it remain active under conditions that exclude many other shrubs.

2. Entrada 2

   Creosote clones expand outward as old central stems die and new shoots arise around the edge, eventually forming rings. The famous "King Clone" in California has been estimated at roughly 11,700 years old.

3. Entrada 3

   The familiar smell of desert rain comes partly from volatile oils released by wet creosote leaves. The shrub is not the source of commercial creosote; its common name comes from the similar resinous odor.
