   Jojoba, Simmondsia chinensis, is native to the Sonoran Desert region. Roughly half of each seed by weight is a liquid wax composed mostly of long-chain wax esters rather than the triglycerides found in ordinary vegetable oils.

2. Entry 2

   Because jojoba stores liquid wax instead of conventional seed oil, it is unusually resistant to oxidation and high temperatures. That chemistry gives it a much longer shelf life than many plant oils.

3. Entry 3

   Jojoba wax closely resembles sperm-whale oil in useful industrial properties. After U.S. restrictions on whale-oil imports in 1971, jojoba was developed as a renewable substitute for lubricants, cosmetics and specialty waxes.
