Disposal site for expired or recalled consumer goods: food packaging, over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, personal-care products. Most contents are inert; Institute field guides flag a small percentage of pharmaceutical residue as still chemically active under specific storage conditions.

Old traders will tell you the consumables piles age in reverse. The first ten years after the war, you could still eat from them. Now the wrappers are worth more than what's inside. A clean label sells better than a full can.

A vitamin bottle pulled from a pile west of Cortez was unopened, undamaged, and dated for an expiration in 1994. The seal was original. The pills inside had been replaced, in the factory, with something the Institute lab could not identify.
