if quest accepted and requirements met

Azra is bent over a workbench strung with salvaged wire, a bowl of something cold pushed to the edge and forgotten. He doesn't look up until your shadow falls across the table.

You found it.

He takes the Answering Machine from your hands and turns it over. A small red light pulses on its face. On. Off. On.

It shouldn't be doing that. Nothing out there holds a charge this long.

And yet here it is, keeping a light on for somebody.

He catches the word, sets his jaw.

A capacitor. That's all. Old tech was built stubborn.

One message on here. Unplayed. Intact, never heard by a living soul.

You understand what that is? A whole person, a moment, saved in a box in the dirt. That belongs to everyone. It always did.

He presses the play control. Nothing answers. The light keeps blinking, indifferent to him.

Of course it can't be simple.

Can you get it playing?

Yes, I think so! I have a few ideas how to get the message playing...

The reading came off an old electronic waste field east of here. Pre-war electronic scrap, picked over a hundred times.

Whatever's still talking is buried in it. Dig.

Azra Thorne barely fits the idea of a shaman. Lean to the point of gaunt, dark hair slipping loose, a woven vest threaded with dead circuit board. He has a handset pressed to one ear, hearing nothing, frowning at it anyway.

You've got a scavenger's hands, and a reputation to go with them. Good. What I'm after is buried under a hundred years of other people's junk, and most who dig out there wouldn't know it from scrap.

Weeks now, I've been pulling a reading off my gear. Faint. Same bearing every time. Dead ground, no line, no power, nothing that should be saying a word.

He turns the handset over in his hands.

The desert's been trying to hand me something. Or a corroded CELL shorting in the sun and I'm a tired man hearing meaning in static. One of the two.

I want what's making the noise. I mapped it to pre-war electronic piles east of Aniid Kin. Go through it. Bring me back whatever's still holding a charge.
