He's at a battered desk, cleaning a sidearm he's already cleaned. He doesn't stop, just lifts his eyes.

You came back. That puts you ahead of about half the people I send out. Well? Is it done, or are you here to explain why it isn't?

I've completed the taskconclui a tarefa de facção

He sets the gun down and gives your account a slow nod, the kind that's heard a lot of accounts.

Good. Clean work. I won't make a speech about it. You did the job, the job's done. That's the whole of it.

Just passing through

Then pass through quiet. I've got enough to do without writing up whatever you stir loose.

A broad man in a worn duster sits behind a desk stacked with patrol reports. He looks up at you with the flat, unhurried patience of a man who has met a thousand strangers and buried a fair number of them.

I run the Ranger station here, for whatever that's worth in a town the Church thinks it owns.

You've got questions, ask them. I'm short on patience, but I'm shorter on people who ask straight.

He picks the rag back up, working oil into the metal out of habit more than need.

What else. I've got all the time in the world and none of it to spare, same as always.

He pulls a patrol map toward him and taps a few marks without much hope.

I'm a station commander with half a station. Most of my Rangers are out holding roads, and the rest I spend arguing with deacons over whose authority is whose.

So yeah, I've got work. The kind I'd hand a green recruit, if I had one to spare. And I don't.

What's the job?

He scrawls something on a scrap and slides it across.

Do it the way it's written. Don't improvise, don't play hero, don't make me explain a body to anybody.

You finish, you come tell me yourself. I like to know who I can count on by name.

He almost smiles. Doesn't quite get there.

Law.

He says it like a word in a dead language.

No. There's no law out here.

No court, no judge, nobody to appeal to when a man takes what's yours and rides off. The bombs took all that along with everything else.

He taps the badge on his chest, worn smooth at the edges.

What's left is this. A few hundred of us in dusters who decided somebody ought to act like there's still a line you don't cross.

We're not the law. We can't be. We're what stands in the spot the law used to occupy, hoping people remember the shape of it well enough to behave.

Some days that's enough. A caravan gets through. A kid grows up.

Some days I bury good people for the trouble.

He meets your eyes.

You want to know if there's law out here, the honest answer is no. There's just whoever's willing to stand in the gap and not run. That's the whole job. It's a stupid job. I've been doing it twenty years.

That's all

Behave yourself in my town. That's all the law you need to worry about.

He leans back, and the humor drains off him. This one he's tired of.

The Church. Wells, filtration, every drop that's safe to drink in fifty miles. They hold it.

They'll tell you they hold it in trust, that they purify it as a sacred duty.

He rubs the back of his neck.

And they do purify it.

That part's real. It's just that a thing you can't live without makes a hell of a leash, and they know exactly how long to let it out.

His voice drops, though there's no one else in the room.

Officially the Rangers answer to nobody. We keep order, we don't take sides. That's the principle.

But you try staying neutral with a faction that decides whether your people drink. Every ruling I make, somewhere behind it is the question of whether the wells stay open to mine.

They've never once had to threaten it. They just let me know they could.

A long breath.

I know the Church better than I'd like. Family reasons. That's why they put me here - figured I'd keep the peace because I understand both sides.

He almost laughs.

What they got was a man who understands exactly how stuck he is.

I have more questionsir para repeat_questions
That's all

Pay for your water, don't steal it, and don't preach at me about it. We'll get along fine.

He's quiet a second, like he's deciding how much to say.

Trouble.

He shakes his head slowly.

That's the thing. None. Not a complaint, not a brawl, not a theft in all my years. The gentlest people in Twin Rocks, by the book. Green-Eye out at their place would give you the robe off his back and mean it.

He taps the desk, once.

And that's what keeps a lawman up. Everybody causes trouble. Drunks, lovers, hungry men, honest men on a bad day - everybody. A group that never does isn't a group of saints. It's a group that's very, very good at making sure nothing reaches me.

People go out to that commune looking for peace. Some of them I never see again. Families tell me they moved on, found their calling, went off to garden someplace.

His mouth twists at the word.

Maybe so. I've got no body, no crime, no complaint. Just a quiet that's a little too clean.

He drops the folder back on the pile.

When you've done this as long as I have, the clean ones are the ones you watch.

I have more questionsir para repeat_questions
That's all

If you go out to that commune, tell somebody first. Tell me. Humor an old man.
