The Burned Camp

You smell it before you see it - acrid, chemical, wrong. Around a bend in the trail, a campsite has been burned. Not a campfire that got out of control - this was deliberate. The fire pattern is too even, the ground too thoroughly scorched. Someone used accelerant.

Two bedrolls are melted into slag. A pack frame leans against a rock, partially intact. Whatever happened here, it happened fast.

Search the pack frame and the edges of the burn zone. Fire doesn't destroy everything.

The pack frame still has a small pouch clipped to the underside - singed but intact. Inside: a few caps, a flint striker, and tightly rolled bandages. At the edge of the burn, you find a knife blade warped by heat and completely useless.

The heat destroyed anything useful. The pack pouch crumbles when you touch it. You sift through ash and find nothing but the faint outline of something that might have been a map, now unreadable.

Move on quickly. Burned camps attract attention - from scavengers, from predators, and from whoever did the burning.

Knowing who makes this stuff could be worth something to the right people.

The residue is too degraded by heat to identify with any confidence. You can tell it's petroleum-based, but so is half the flammable junk in the wasteland. Without a proper kit, you can't distinguish manufactured accelerant from spilled lamp oil. The burn pattern is suggestive but not conclusive.
