The Coyote Pack

Four coyotes watch you from a ridge about forty meters off the trail. They're not hiding - they're sitting in a line, ears forward, perfectly still. Watching. Waiting.

Coyotes don't normally behave like this. They scatter when they see people. These four look fed, alert, and completely unafraid.

  1. 1

Keep walking but pick up a few rocks. Thrown stones usually scatter them.

You grab a fist-sized rock and hurl it toward the ridge. It cracks against stone and the coyotes scatter - but slowly, almost casually, as if they're humoring you. They disappear over the ridge. You don't see them again, but you walk faster.

    Fracaso

You throw a rock and it falls short. The coyotes don't move. They continue watching. You throw another - this one lands closer, and the lead coyote tilts its head. Then they all stand up simultaneously and walk away in single file. The coordination is unsettling.

  2. 2

Stop and make yourself look large. Sustained eye contact. Dominant posture. Wait them out.

You plant your feet, square your shoulders, and stare directly at the lead coyote. For a full minute, nothing happens. Then the lead animal yawns - elaborately, deliberately - and turns away. The others follow. You've been dismissed by a coyote. At least it left.

    Fracaso

You hold the stare for two minutes. The lead coyote lies down. The others follow suit. They're not intimidated - they're comfortable. You're the one standing in the sun sweating. Eventually you just start walking. They watch you go.

  3. 3

That behavior pattern - you've seen it before. These coyotes are guarding something.

    Éxito

Coyotes sit in a line facing the same direction when they're watching over a den or a kill. You scan downwind and spot it - a fresh deer carcass in a gully behind the ridge. They're protecting a food source, not stalking you. You give the gully a wide berth and the coyotes ignore you entirely once you're past their sight line. You also now know where deer are grazing - useful information for hunters.

    Fracaso

You're sure they're guarding a den, but when you circle wide to confirm, there's nothing behind the ridge - no den, no kill, no cache. The coyotes have moved to a new position and are watching you again. You've wasted twenty minutes trying to out-think animals that apparently just enjoy watching people.
