The Dice Game

Behind the trading post, four settlers sit in a circle on overturned crates, rolling bone dice on a flattened piece of sheet metal. Caps change hands with every throw. One of them spots you watching and waves you over.

"Room for one more. Five caps to buy in. We play clean - no weighted dice, no palm rolls. Just luck and nerve."

Elecciones

  1. 1

Buy in and play. Five caps is cheap entertainment.

    Éxito

The dice run hot in your favor. Three rounds in, you're up and the table knows it. You cash out before your luck turns. Smart.

    Fracaso

The dice do not, as it turns out, care about your feelings. You're cleaned out in four rounds. The winner at least has the decency not to grin.

  2. 2

Decline. Gambling is a tax on people who can't do math.

You watch for a while instead. The dynamics are interesting - who bluffs, who folds early, who gets angry. You learn more about the local personalities in twenty minutes than you would in a week of small talk.

    Fracaso
  3. 3

You notice one of the players palming a second die. Expose him - or use the knowledge.

    Éxito

You say nothing. Instead, you buy in and play the cheater's rhythm against him - betting low when he's loading the dice, betting high when he can't without exposing himself. He realizes you've figured him out. By the time he folds, you've taken most of the pot.

    Fracaso

You try to play the cheater's rhythm, but he's better at this than you expected. He spots your pattern before you spot his timing, switches techniques, and cleans you out in two rounds. He winks at you on the way out. Professional courtesy.
