A mangy dog sits at the edge of the market square, whining at anyone who passes. It's wearing a makeshift collar - clearly someone's animal, not feral. Every few minutes it trots a few steps toward an alley, looks back, and whines again.
A passing trader mutters, "That dog's been at it since dawn. Owner probably drank himself dead somewhere."

You walk past. The whining fades behind you. Whatever the dog's problem is, it'll sort itself out - or it won't.

The dog leads you through two alleys to a collapsed overhang where an old man lies unconscious, dehydrated but alive. You drag him to shade and flag down help. By evening, someone finds you and presses a small bundle into your hands. "From Matteo. He says thanks."

The dog leads you on a winding tour of the settlement's least appealing corners, then sits down next to a pile of garbage and starts eating. There is no owner. There was never an owner. It just wanted company for lunch.
