The Snake Den

You hear the rattle before you see them. A cluster of rocks beside the trail is alive with movement - diamond-patterned scales catching the afternoon sun. A rattlesnake den, recently active, with at least three adults visible in the gaps between the stones.

The trail passes within two meters of the den. There's no obvious detour without losing an hour to rough terrain.

Escolhas

  1. 1

Move past quickly and quietly. Snakes aren't aggressive if you don't give them a reason.

    Sucesso

You lower your profile, slow your breathing, and walk past at a steady pace. The rattling intensifies briefly as you pass, then fades. The snakes don't strike. They had no reason to - you gave them none.

    Falha

You take three calm steps before your boot catches a loose stone. The clatter triggers a defensive lunge from the nearest snake. It misses your ankle by centimeters. You cover the remaining distance at a speed you didn't know you could achieve.

  2. 2

Take the long way around. An hour lost is better than a snakebite in the middle of nowhere.

You backtrack and circle wide through the scrub. The terrain is rough but manageable. You lose time but keep all your blood inside your body, which is where it belongs.

    Falha
  3. 3

You know snake behavior. Time of day, temperature, and body language tell you exactly when and how to pass safely.

    Sucesso

Afternoon sun means the snakes are warming, not hunting - they're sluggish and defensive, not aggressive. You watch their tongue-flicks to gauge threat response. When the largest one pulls into a coil, you wait. When it extends to bask, you move. Smooth, even steps, no vibration. You pass within a meter and the snakes don't even rattle. On the far side, you spot a shed skin caught on a rock - intact, almost a meter long. Valuable to anyone who processes snake leather.

    Falha

You time your approach for a basking lull, but a juvenile you didn't see bolts across the trail right under your foot. You freeze. Every adult in the den starts rattling simultaneously. You stand motionless for five full minutes until they settle. You pass safely, but your legs are shaking for the next kilometer.
