   You get your ration without incident. The line holds. The old man behind you gets his too, eventually. The system works - slowly, imperfectly, but it works.

   A surge from behind pushes you sideways and you lose your spot. By the time you work your way back, the distribution worker is announcing reduced rations. You get half of what you expected.

   Let the old man go ahead of you. He needs it more and he won't survive a push.

   You step aside and guide the old man forward. He fills his container with shaking hands and whispers thanks. Several people behind you nod in quiet approval. The distribution worker hands you an extra measure when your turn comes. "For being decent."

   You step aside for the old man, and three other people immediately shove into the gap. The old man gets his water, but you're now twenty places further back. Your turn comes right as the barrel empties.

   The crowd is getting dangerous. You know how to project calm authority in a tense situation.

   You plant yourself at the choke point, square your shoulders, and start directing traffic. Your size and steady voice cut through the noise. People fall into line almost automatically - turns out most of them just wanted someone to impose order. The distribution worker mouths 'thank you' and gives you an extra ration.

   You step into the crowd and try to take charge, but someone shoves you from behind. "Who made you the boss?" The crowd closes around you and you spend the next ten minutes just trying to get back to your original position.
