   Hopi people mined coal from Arizona's Black Mesa as early as 1300 AD for pottery firing and home heating, centuries before industrial Peabody operations began in 1970.

   Archaeological excavations at Jirentaigoukou in northwestern China revealed the world's earliest systematic coal mining and burning, dating back roughly 3,600 years to the Bronze Age.
