Ten of them, pulled out one at a time and finished where the lamp could show you what you were hitting.

Whatever's left in the cave has learned to stay back from the light.

You drag the lamp over to the niche and get your hands on the generator properly for the first time.

It's in better condition than anything you own. The block is clean under the dust. The plugs are seated, the tank has fuel in it, and the last person to touch this machine serviced it before they left.

completes the quest

It should start. It doesn't, and it won't, because the cable box on its flank is empty.

Four leads hang out of the loom and not one of them is in a socket.

You can hear them out past the lamp. Rock that shifts when nothing has touched it.

The generator will still be here when the cave is empty. Not before.

You come back with a bar and take the rubble apart at the edge of the slab, where the ceiling came down short of the wall.

Two hours before the lamp finds an edge that isn't rock. A frame - steel, set into poured concrete - and a door inside the frame with no handle on this side.

A panel beside it, dead as the stone around it. A conduit runs off the frame, along the wall, into a niche cut back into the rock.

There's a generator in the niche under dust that's had decades to settle. Somebody built it in here, sealed the room, and dropped the ceiling behind them on the way out.

You'd need light and hours to say more than that.

Then the boulder at the edge of the lamplight moves.

Mimics. They come in through the same gaps the wind uses and eat whatever else does. Under the dust, in the dark, one of them is a rock until it isn't.

Nobody works for long with that behind them.
