The Standoff

Voices carry in the desert. You hear them before you see anything - two people, shouting. Over the next rise, a man and a woman stand ten meters apart on the trail, each with a hand on their weapon. Between them on the ground sits a sealed container - pre-war military, by the look of it.

They both found it at the same time. Neither is willing to walk away. And now they've noticed you.

"You - stranger!" the man calls. "Tell this person the law of the waste. I saw it first."

"He's lying," the woman says flatly. "I was here before dawn."

You make your call and the other party backs off with a stream of profanity. The winner cracks open the container and shares a portion of the contents with you as thanks for the support.

Your intervention only makes things worse. Both parties turn on you - the one you sided against for being unfair, the one you helped for taking too long to decide. They end up splitting the container between themselves while you stand there feeling like a referee who got ejected from the game.

Both parties grumble but take their share. The woman flips you a small pouch of caps on her way out. "For your trouble."

You step between them and the man immediately takes it as a threat. "Oh, so now there's three of us who want it?" The woman shifts her stance too. Your weapon doesn't intimidate - it escalates. You back off slowly with both hands visible. They go back to shouting at each other as if you were never there.
