Magnus turns the Answering Machine over in his hands the way a jeweler turns a stone he's pretending not to want.

Here's the truth of it. The box is junk. The voice inside is not. Wrapped in a scheme I've seen maybe twice, and never once on a household tape out of a desert dump.

I can open it. That's a favor I do once and charge for.

But the real money is in what walks through my square next.

So hear me. Next time you turn up an oddity like this, something that hums wrong, something locked far too well for what it is, you don't carry it to the shamans and their sermons, and you don't whisper a word of it to the Institute.

Azra takes the Decoded Mini Cassetteand feeds it into a battered deck wired into his bench.

He presses play. The static clears. For the first time in forty years, the message runs whole.

I made it through but it's wrong, it's a desert, it's already over here, everything is already over.

I can hear my own voice out in the dark, saying this again and again. I don't know which one of them is me anymore. I'm so tired of arriving.

The tape clicks to its end. Azra makes no move to stop the deck. It hisses empty air into the quiet between you.

He kept calling a number that couldn't ring. Just to hear it try.

He said he could hear himself out there. More than one of him.

The old shamans talk that way. Voices in the wire, one soul in too many places.
