1. Entry 1

   Most of Earth's coal formed during the Carboniferous Period, 359–299 million years ago, when tropical swamp forests buried plant matter that compressed into peat and coal.

2. Entry 2

   Hopi people mined coal from Arizona's Black Mesa as early as 1300 AD for pottery firing and home heating, centuries before industrial Peabody operations began in 1970.

3. Entry 3

   Archaeological excavations at Jirentaigoukou in northwestern China revealed the world's earliest systematic coal mining and burning, dating back roughly 3,600 years to the Bronze Age.
