1. Entry 1

   Genetic and historical evidence indicates carrots were domesticated in Central Asia, around modern Iran and Afghanistan, roughly 1,100 years ago, from the wild Queen Anne's lace progenitor.

2. Entry 2

   Early domesticated carrots were purple or yellow, not orange; the familiar orange "Long Orange" and "Horn" cultivars originated in the 17th-century Netherlands through selective breeding.

3. Entry 3

   The plant naturally produces falcarinol, a compound that defends against fungal disease; though toxic to mice in lab tests, it has no toxic effect at normal human consumption.
