Tepary Bean Field.
- Entrada 1
Tepary bean, Phaseolus acutifolius, is native to the Sonoran Desert and highly adapted to heat and drought. Traditional crops were planted with summer monsoons and could produce using seasonal floodwater from desert arroyos.
- Entrada 2
Archaeological tepary beans from Mexico's Tehuacán Valley date to about 2,500 years ago, while cultivated beans occur at Hohokam sites in Arizona around 1,000 years old. Genetic evidence points to domestication in northern Mexico.
- Entrada 3
Traditional Sonoran Desert farmers planted tepary beans with the summer monsoon, using ak-chin fields that spread runoff from arroyos across cropland. Modern breeders study the species for heat and drought tolerance.
