1. Entry 1

   Ilmenite (FeTiO₃) and rutile (TiO₂) are major commercial titanium minerals. Despite titanium metal's aerospace reputation, about 95% of titanium is consumed as titanium dioxide, chiefly as white pigment.

2. Entry 2

   Metallic titanium cannot be smelted from oxide with carbon like iron because it readily forms titanium carbide. The Kroll process instead converts the ore to titanium tetrachloride, then reduces it with molten magnesium.

3. Entry 3

   Titanium was first identified in 1791 from black ilmenite sand in Cornwall. Martin Klaproth independently found it in rutile in 1795 and named the element after the Titans of Greek mythology.
