Trading

Caps are the currency of the wasteland. You earn them from quests, tasks, NPC traders and other players, and you spend them on almost everything.

NPC traders

Settlements usually have NPC traders.

They sell a fixed stock and they buy a fixed list of things.

The player market

Some settlements have a player market.

Markets are local. A listing exists at one settlement, and you have to be standing there to buy from it. What sells well in one town does not in another.

Selling

Set a price per unit and a duration.

You pay a listing fee of 3% of the total value up front, whether or not it sells.

When it sells, 10% sales tax comes off what you receive. The buyer pays the price you set; you get the rest.

Buying

Buying costs exactly the listed price.

You must be at the market and you need the inventory space for what you are buying.

Other ways to move goods

The post office lets you send items and messages directly to another player, once you have unlocked it.

Faction stores are a separate economy entirely, paid for in tokens rather than caps.
