1. Entry 1

   Desert ironwood, Olneya tesota, is the only species in its genus and is almost confined to the Sonoran Desert. It grows slowly in hot washes and valleys where many other trees cannot persist.

2. Entry 2

   Ironwood heartwood is so dense that it sinks in water and is exceptionally resistant to decay. Some desert ironwoods are estimated to be many centuries old, with ages around 800 years considered plausible.

3. Entry 3

   An ironwood canopy acts as a desert nursery, buffering seedlings from frost, extreme heat and intense sunlight. Ecologists describe the tree as a nurse plant and habitat-modifying keystone species.
