   Honey mesquite is native to the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico, ranging from California east through Texas and Kansas south to Louisiana, Nuevo León, and Baja California.

2. Entrada 2

   Southwestern Indigenous peoples ground mesquite pods into sweet flour for cakes and traditional horno bread; Apache and Pima groups fermented the seeds into a pinole beverage.

3. Entrada 3

   The word "mesquite" is a Spanish adaptation of the Aztec Nahuatl name "mizquitl"; the dense wood is famously used in the Southwest to impart smoky flavor to grilled meats.
