- Entry 1
The metal bands on the talons are not mutation. They are pre-war aluminum identification rings, fitted to chicks. Specimens have been observed installing rings on their own offspring using salvaged wire. The behavior is taught, not inherited.
- Entry 2
Old riders along the Rio Grande say a raven that watches you for three days will follow you for thirty. They feed it once on the third morning. Not to befriend it. To make sure it knows the difference between you and the next traveler.
- Entry 3
A nest excavated near the Scar contained no eggs. Instead, twenty-three small bones, each filed to identical length, arranged in a pattern that matches no known orthography. The bones were not from the same species. None were avian.
